I just bought the MacBook Air (2018 model) for college for the next 5 years. But I wanted to download The Sims 4 for my downtime. Should I not do this since it's not a gaming laptop? Will it slow down my computer and make it not worth it?

There are many other suitable options for a Sims 4 laptop out there, like the newer MacBook Pros (2014 onwards) and the MacBook Air (2015 onwards), which can run the game with pretty much all the expansions at low to medium graphics settings. I have a 2020 macbook air with an intel i3. I think it’s just the base model. I can run sims 4 on low graphics fine but the fan goes crazy. I only play 30-45 minutes before I let it cool.
Only if you run The Sims 4 will the screen response seem slower than usually running MacOS programs that are not games. Not running The Sims 4 lets your non-gaming laptop run normally.
Unless it's running, it will not slow your machine down. It will, of course, take up storage space on the drive, if that's important to you. And the program may not run at its best on that machine.
